Karen McDevitt serves as an Associate Professor of Teaching at Wayne State University, specializing in Communication through the Graduate Certificate in Communication and New Media program. She instructs core courses including New Media Practices (COM 5280) and New Media Theory (COM 6270), alongside film and media criticism courses across undergraduate and graduate levels.
She holds an Individual Interdisciplinary Ph.D. from Wayne State University (2002) with a specialization in new media communication and gender studies, establishing her academic foundation for over two decades of teaching.
Her research critically examines how new media reshapes contemporary social practices and online communities, analyzing media convergence through cultural studies frameworks. She maintains strong scholarly engagement with film and television criticism as complementary research dimensions.
Professionally, McDevitt serves on the Editorial Board of Directors for Wayne State University Press and previously contributed a decade of service to the Detroit Film Theatre Executive Board at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Her pre-academic career featured founding five graphic art studios in the Detroit metro area, demonstrating applied media industry experience.
