Professor Karen McCloskey is a faculty member at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences and the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology. Her research focuses on urological cancers, radiation toxicity, and bladder dysfunction, with a particular emphasis on ion channel roles in cancer progression and disease mechanisms. She has received prestigious awards, including the Sir Robin MacLellan Prize (2002) and a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship (2004). McCloskey leads interdisciplinary projects funded by EU, MRC, and others, including studies on radiation-induced bladder toxicity and biomarker discovery. She actively supervises PhD candidates and collaborates internationally. Her teaching spans clinical science and oncology drug discovery.
Key research themes include cellular signaling in bladder diseases, radiation therapy side effects, and cancer biomarkers. Notable projects include EU-funded work on urinary incontinence and MRC-supported studies on radiation toxicity in prostate cancer patients. McCloskey coordinates research programs and fellowships, contributing to the Future Medicines Institute and other initiatives.
