Karen Kuo is an Associate Professor and Interim School Director at Arizona State University's School of Social Transformation. Her research focuses on geopolitical and cultural representations of Asia and Asians in early 20th-century American films and novels, exploring how U.S. narratives about Asia shaped perceptions of foreign and domestic identity. She led the International Nikkei Legacy Project (INRP), creating a database of global Japanese diaspora sources in Arizona.
Teaching interests include Asian American literature, film/media studies, and immigrant literature. She actively engages with Arizona communities through public talks on Asian American and Pacific Islander history and culture. Future research will examine Taiwanese American community formation during the Cold War.
Her work appears in edited volumes like 'Japanese Americans in Arizona,' co-edited with colleagues. She holds affiliations with organizations such as the Japanese American National Museum.
