Karen Johnston is a Professor of Organisational Studies at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Business & Law, affiliated with the School of Organisations, Systems and People and the Centre for Blue Governance. Previously, she served as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, leading the successful REF2021 submission for Business and Management. Her research focuses on public governance, gender representation, and policies supporting women's leadership. She holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town (2002), with earlier degrees from South African and US institutions.
Education: PhD in Public Sector Reforms (University of Cape Town, 2002), degrees in Social Sciences and Public Administration from the University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, and Ohio State University.
Research Interests: Gender representation in public organisations, barriers to female leadership, and gender equality policy. Key publications include work on representative bureaucracy and women entrepreneurs in Public Management Review and the International Review for Administrative Sciences. She edited The International Handbook on Public Administration and Governance and authored Making and Managing Public Policy.
Awards: 2018 Julia J. Henderson Award for public administration scholarship, 2015 Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences. Active in academic networks like the International Research Society for Public Management and European Group for Public Administration.
Teaching: Public management, leadership, gender equality, and research methods. Supervises undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral research. Engaged in projects on gender equality in EU contexts and women's entrepreneurial leadership.
Labs/Teams: Leads research projects such as 'Gender Equality and Inclusion: Empowering Women in the EU' and 'Accelerating Women's Enterprise.' Editorial roles include Public Money & Management journal.
