Karen Freund

Karen M. Freund, MD, MPH, is the Sheldon M. Wolff Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. She holds appointments as Professor in the Department of Medicine and Public Health and Community Medicine, and is a member of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences’ Clinical and Translational Science Program. Her roles include Associate Director for Research Collaborations at the Tufts CTSI and teaching in the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Freund earned an AB in Psychology & Social Relations from Harvard University (1979), an MD from Stanford University School of Medicine (1983), and an MPH from Boston University School of Public Health (1989). Her postgraduate training includes residencies in Internal Medicine (Cambridge Health Alliance) and Preventive Medicine (Boston Medical Center), and a General Medicine Fellowship (Boston University).

Her research focuses on women’s health, clinical epidemiology, and translational science. She previously directed the Women’s Health Interdisciplinary Research Center at Boston University and led the BIRCWH program, mentoring clinical investigators in women’s health. Her work bridges clinical practice, public health, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dr. Freund’s leadership roles include Chair of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and prior positions as Professor at Boston University Schools of Medicine and Public Health. She is affiliated with the Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies at Tufts Medical Center.
