Karen Flood is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Harvard Summer School and an affiliated faculty member in the Committee on Degrees in Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. She previously served as the Allston Burr Dudley House Dean (2008–2015) and Acting Director of Studies in WGS (2006–2008), following her role as Assistant Director of Studies in the History and Literature concentration.
Educational Background:
- Ph.D. in History of American Civilization from Harvard University
Research Expertise: Karen specializes in 19th- and 20th-century American cultural history, focusing on intersections of gender and sexuality, the body, death rituals, and visual culture. Her work explores themes like medical history, memorialization practices, and societal constructs of bodily norms. Teaching interests include reproductive technologies, beauty standards, and race and ethnicity in historical contexts.
