Karen Fang is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Houston, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. She specializes in film studies, visual culture, and postcolonial theory, with a focus on Hong Kong cinema and Asian American representation. Her work bridges academic research with public engagement through radio commentary and museum collaborations.
Education includes a BA from the University of Pennsylvania (1994), and MA/PhD from Johns Hopkins University (1998, 2002). She teaches courses such as *Hong Kong Cinema*, *Surveillance and Orientalism*, and *Theories of the Moving Image*.
Her research explores intersections of global and imperial cultures, including dystopian themes in Chinese fiction and the influence of Hong Kong cinema on Hollywood. Notable publications include *Arresting Cinema: Surveillance in Hong Kong Film* (2017) and *Background Artist: The Life and Work of Tyrus Wong* (2024), honored with an award from the Chinese American Librarians Association.
Fang chairs the Media and Moving Image initiative, overseeing an annual student prize competition. She contributes to *The Engines of Our Ingenuity*, a public radio series, focusing on visual arts and innovation. Affiliations include the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Houston Cinema Arts Society.
