Dr. Gary Bettinson is a Senior Lecturer in the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts at Lancaster University. His research focuses on film aesthetics, Hong Kong/Asian cinema, and American film traditions. He teaches courses such as Contemporary Hong Kong Cinema, Film Theory, and Media Studies. As Editor-in-Chief of Asian Cinema journal, he actively contributes to scholarly discourse on East Asian film.
His work explores neoformalism, historical poetics, and film authorship. Notable publications include The Sensuous Cinema of Wong Kar-wai (2025) and edited volumes on Stephen Chow and Hong Kong horror cinema. Bettinson has supervised four postgraduate students and regularly engages in invited talks and interviews on cinematic topics.
His academic contributions span over 70 publications, including books, journal articles, and interviews. He is affiliated with research groups focusing on film cultures and contemporary arts.
