Karen E. Gibbs, MD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Yale University and Chair of Surgery at Yale New Haven Health’s Bridgeport Hospital. Her expertise spans minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, with a focus on obesity-related diseases and metabolic disorders. She leads a comprehensive team dedicated to weight-loss surgery and postoperative care, emphasizing lifelong follow-up. Dr. Gibbs holds dual board certifications in General Surgery and Obesity Medicine and has held leadership roles, including Associate Chair for Surgery at Northwell Health and Director of multiple residency programs.
Education: BS in Applied Anatomy & Physiology from Boston University (1992), MD from Tufts University School of Medicine (1997), residency at Montefiore Medical Center (2002), and fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery (2003).
Research interests include clinical outcomes in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery, with publications on topics such as metabolic bone disease, surgical complications, and patient-centered care. She advocates for multidisciplinary approaches to address obesity stigma and improve patient quality of life.
