Karen Dubinsky

Karen Dubinsky is a Professor in the Department of History and holds a cross-appointment in Global Development Studies at Queen's University. She specializes in transnational history with a focus on Canadian-Global South relations, particularly Cuba. Her research explores themes such as Cuban musical cultures, global childhood politics, and transnational historical perspectives. She teaches courses in both History and Global Development Studies, including a field school in Havana, Cuba.

Education: Ph.D. (History, Queen's University, 1991), M.A. (Institute of Canadian Studies, Carleton University, 1985), B.A. (History, Carleton University, 1983).

Research Interests: Canadian-Cuban cultural relations, gender and sexuality studies, global migration patterns, and the politics of music in Cuba. Current projects include SSHRC-funded studies on Canadian-Cuban non-state relations and a podcast series on Cuban musicians in Canada.

Awards: Queen’s Award for International Educational Innovation (2016), Queen’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision (2007).

Supervision: Advising Eric Fillion (Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of History). Active in mentoring graduate students on transnational Canada and Cuba-Canada relations.
