Dr. Karen D. Rudolph is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the Center for Social & Behavioral Science. Her research focuses on identifying risk and protective processes influencing psychopathology development, particularly in adolescents, with emphasis on depression, suicide, and stress responses. She employs multi-method approaches including longitudinal studies, neuroimaging (fMRI), hormone assessments, and experimental tasks. Recent work includes developing prevention programs for adolescent depression.
Education: Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Research interests include developmental psychopathology, stress and emotion regulation, and the interplay between biological, psychological, and social factors in mental health. Her work examines how pubertal timing, peer/family relationships, and early adversity contribute to mental health outcomes.
Key research themes include: (1) Neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms underlying adolescent depression and suicide risk, (2) Role of social contexts (peer victimization, family dynamics) in mental health trajectories, (3) Development of emotion regulation interventions targeting resilience in girls. Over 140 publications span peer-reviewed journals like Child Development and Development and Psychopathology.
Collaborations involve institutions globally, focusing on interdisciplinary projects combining neuroscience, psychology, and public health. Current grants support studies on inflammatory biomarkers in suicide risk, digital peer support interventions, and neural mechanisms of social feedback processing in adolescents.
