Karen Clay is the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, with courtesy appointments at the Tepper School of Business and the Department of Engineering and Public Policy. She serves as a Senior Fellow at the Scott Institute for Energy Innovation and a Research Associate at the National Bureau for Economic Research (NBER). Her work bridges economic history, environmental economics, and public policy, focusing on energy, pollution, and climate change.
- Education: Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University; B.A. in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Virginia.
Research Interests span economic history, environmental economics, pollution impacts, and energy policy, with a particular emphasis on historical data to understand modern issues like the resource curse and climate change adaptation. Her recent publications examine lead pollution's health effects, decarbonization trends, and energy certification effectiveness.
