Karen Campbell is an Associate Professor at the School of Health and Social Care at Edinburgh Napier University and serves as an Honorary Research Consultant in Chemotherapy for NHS Lothian. Her work bridges academic research with clinical practice, focusing on improving cancer care delivery and patient outcomes across various healthcare settings in Scotland.
Dr. Campbell's research interests span several critical areas in oncology nursing and patient care. She specializes in chemotherapy safety practices, with particular focus on hazardous drug handling protocols and occupational exposure risks for cancer nurses. Her work in patient-centered care examines holistic needs assessment methodologies, especially at critical transition points in the cancer journey such as at the end of active treatment. She has made significant contributions to understanding the psychosocial dimensions of cancer care, including how physical concerns may mask underlying emotional needs in cancer survivors. Her research increasingly addresses healthcare transformation, with emphasis on integrated care pathways, equitable access to cancer services, and the evolving role of nurses in complex healthcare systems.
Dr. Campbell has secured substantial research funding from multiple sources including Macmillan Cancer Support, the UK Oncology Nursing Society, and the Digital Health Institute. Her current projects include:
- Evaluation of a digital Solution for Pain Assessment in Scottish Care Services (2024-2025, £27,551)
- Transforming Cancer Care Evaluation (2022-2024, £79,225)
- Exploring nurses' perceptions of occupational exposure to cytotoxic drugs (2022-2024, £48,348)
- Research on aerobic exercise training to reduce chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity (2018-2021, £58,079)
As an academic supervisor, Dr. Campbell serves as Director of Studies for doctoral research examining widening participation in nursing education and as Second Supervisor for projects focused on older adults living with cancer. Her collaborative approach is evident in her extensive work with national cancer care initiatives and partnerships with NHS Scotland, where she contributes her expertise to improve cancer care delivery and patient outcomes across the continuum of care.
