Karen Bulmer is the Dean of the School of Music at Memorial University of Newfoundland and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor. She specializes in Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba performance, and the integration of mind-body practices into musical training. Her work focuses on mindfulness, movement, and self-regulation strategies to enhance musicians' expression and resilience. She leads the MUN Low Brass Studio, which supports students in diverse performance styles and career paths.
Dr. Bulmer earned a B. Mus. A. from the University of Western Ontario, followed by M.Mus., M.M.A., and D.M.A. degrees from Yale University. She is also a certified yoga instructor with training in biomechanics and anatomy for musicians. Her interdisciplinary projects include the Music, Mind, and Movement Podcast, exploring holistic approaches to music education through conversations with educators, health professionals, and somatic practitioners.
Her performances include the original one-woman show Girl Meets Tuba and collaborations with classical, folk, and pop artists. She has presented at interdisciplinary conferences like ideaCity and produced radio pieces such as Joined at the Lip, broadcast globally.
Former students of the Low Brass Studio have pursued careers in music, medicine, law, and entrepreneurship, attesting to the program’s holistic approach. Her research bridges traditional music training with modern wellness practices, emphasizing lifelong skill development beyond performance.
