Karen Brakell is an Adjunct Professor at Charles Sturt University (CSU) School of Engineering, combining academic engagement with a 17-year career as a Chartered Principal Water Resources Engineer at WSP (formerly Parsons Brinckerhoff). Her expertise spans surface water management, flood analysis, and infrastructure projects. She has led teams of 16 professionals and serves as a technical lead for major infrastructure projects in NSW, QLD, and ACT.
Education & Experience:
- 17+ years’ experience in civil engineering consultancy
- 12 years with WSP, including 6 years of remote work
- Adjunct role at CSU since at least 2019
Research Focus: Karen’s work bridges engineering practice and education, particularly in practice-based simulation for engineering cadet development. She emphasizes sustainable development goals (SDGs) related to clean water and resilient infrastructure. Her research also addresses flood emergency management and drainage solutions for large-scale projects.
Awards: Co-recipient of the Charles Sturt 2020 Excellence Awards, recognizing contributions to teaching and learning innovation.
Leadership: Mentor to engineers at all career stages, technical champion for flood emergency management, and project lead for major infrastructure initiatives. She has managed teams with diverse experience levels, from undergraduates to Ph.D. holders.
