Karen Beeftink

Karen Beeftink is an Associate Professor of Recreation and Tourism Management at the University of Maine. She coordinates the Outdoor Recreation and Leadership program and Conservation Law and Outdoor Management program. Her teaching focuses on outdoor leadership, recreation management, nature-based tourism, and experiential education, often incorporating field experiences including international travel to Patagonia, Costa Rica, and Fiji.

Research interests include visitor experience management in protected areas with emphasis on soundscapes, sociocultural aspects of tourism involving indigenous communities, and inclusive recreation practices. She currently chairs the Outreach and Education committee for the Downeast Coastal Conservancy, a nonprofit focused on ecological conservation and public engagement with natural environments.

Prior professional experience includes adventure education, wilderness leadership, conservation work, and roles as a certified Maine Recreation Guide and Leave No Trace Master Educator. Her outdoor expertise spans rock climbing, kayaking, and extensive backcountry travel across North America.
