Karen A. Callaghan is a Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Barry University. She earned her BA from La Salle College and her MA and Ph.D. from Ohio State University.

Her research spans critical areas of sociology including race, class, and gender dynamics; symbolic violence; cultural politics; and the impacts of globalization. She has edited a collection of essays on women and beauty and co-authored a book exploring intersections of race, violence, and democracy. Recent work examines service-learning pedagogy and fair trade's influence on development.
As an active academic leader, she oversees undergraduate studies initiatives and teaches courses on sociology of violence, community organizing, and sociological theory.
