Karel Vanhaesebrouck

Karel Vanhaesebrouck is a Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He teaches theatre history, performance theory, and dramaturgy, with a focus on early modern (Baroque) theatre, cultural representations, and Flemish performing arts. Vanhaesebrouck co-authored "Marketing Violence: The Affective Economy of Violent Imagneries in the Dutch Republic" (Cambridge University Press, 2023) and supervises a transnational dramaturgy research project with Shintaro Fujii from Waseda University. He also founded Game*Play, a monthly workshop on video games.

Vanhaesebrouck serves as director of the Centre de Recherche en Cinéma et Spectacle Vivant (CiASp), contributing to interdisciplinary research in performing arts and cinema. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary cultural practices, emphasizing affect theory and transnational collaborations.
