Dr. Karel Kriz is an Assistant Professor of Cartography and Geoinformation Science at the University of Vienna, affiliated with the Institute for Geography and Regional Research. His work focuses on advancing cartographic design, web-based cartography, and geocommunication, with a strong emphasis on mountain cartography and risk communication. He has led projects such as the VIRUS Atlas (tracking pandemic-related spatial data), AustrianVineyards.com (a wine estate mapping system), and ALBINA (cross-border avalanche risk management).
Education: PhD in Geography (1994, University of Vienna), MSc in Geography (1989, University of Vienna), and studies in Computer Science at the University of Illinois, USA.
Research interests include topographic mapping, thematic cartography, GIScience, and the application of cartography in disaster management and cultural heritage. He has authored/co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and led major interdisciplinary projects like the Hydrological Atlas of Austria and the Digitising Patterns of Power initiative.
He serves on editorial boards, including the Cartographic Journal and Lecture Notes in Geoinformation, and chairs the International Cartographic Association's Mountain Cartography Commission. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in cartography, geocommunication, and risk management.
