Kara Wittman is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on the history and theory of the literary and philosophical essay, alongside critical pedagogy in writing and rhetoric. She co-edited The Cambridge Companion to the Essay (2022) and is currently collaborating on a project about U.S. Farm Security Administration photographic essays, exploring their ethnographic and political dimensions.
Previously at Pomona College, Wittman directed the College Writing program and founded the Center for Speaking, Writing, and the Image, emphasizing inclusive pedagogy and language justice. Her work addresses plagiarism, the politics of clarity, and metacognitive approaches to writing. She advocates for reflective writing practices to foster inclusive classrooms and resist exclusionary grading norms.
Her publications span topics like STEAM education rhetoric, writing center theory, and interdisciplinary pedagogy. She holds office hours by appointment and teaches courses at Berkeley since Fall 2016.
