Kara A. Peruccio is an Assistant Professor of History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maine. She holds a PhD in Islamic History from the University of Chicago (2020), an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago (2014), and a BA in History from Wake Forest University (2011). Her research focuses on transnational feminisms, modern Middle Eastern history, and Mediterranean cultural history. She has been supported by the Mellon Foundation, ZEIT-Stiftung, and the Nicholson Center for British Studies.
Her work examines authoritarian gender politics in interwar Italy and Turkey, with a forthcoming book Suffrage Mediterranean Style (NYU Press) analyzing women’s suffrage movements across the Mediterranean. She has published in Journal of Women’s History and Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association, and presented at major conferences like the American Historical Association and Middle East Studies Association.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Mediterranean history, transnational feminisms, and graduate professional development. Previously, she held a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Uşak, Turkey (2011–12).
