Sarah D. Shields

Sarah D. Shields is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on Middle Eastern history, particularly the interwar period, with an emphasis on the League of Nations' role in shaping regional dynamics. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago (1986) and an MA from the University of Kansas (1980).

Her work examines topics such as French-Turkish diplomacy, the Greek-Turkish population exchange, and Ottoman legacy in the eastern Mediterranean. Notable publications include Fezzes in the River (2011) and articles on Palestinian riots, Mosul disputes, and sectarianism in the Middle East.

Shields teaches courses like HIST 62 (Nations, Borders, and Identities) and HIST 276 (The Modern Middle East). She advises graduate students, including co-advising Kylie Broderick and Burak Bulkan. She has participated in grants such as the Mellon Foundation Sawyer Seminar on 'Diversity and Conformity in Muslim Societies.'
