Kao-Ly Yang

Kao-Ly Yang is a Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics at California State University, Fresno, within the College of Arts and Humanities. She serves as the Coordinator of the Hmong Studies Program, Advisor of the Hmong Minor, and Chair of the Hmong Voices Series.

Dr. Yang specializes in Hmong and French linguistics, cultural anthropology, and teaching methodologies for Hmong and French as foreign/maternal languages. Her research emphasizes Hmong cultural and religious changes, curriculum development for heritage language education, and theories of ethnic boundaries for stateless communities. She has also contributed to collaborative health research, cultural competency studies, and child socialization practices.

Scientific Awards:

• Provost's Award of Outstanding Lecturer (2020)

Her work includes creating a college-level textbook series titled "Planting a Tree. Let's Learn Hmong Language. Kawm Lus Hmoob", reflecting her dedication to preserving Hmong language and cultural heritage. She teaches courses ranging from elementary to advanced Hmong language and culture, as well as French literature and language courses.
