Professor Kamlesh Khunti is a globally renowned academic and clinician specializing in Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine at the University of Leicester. He holds leadership roles as Director of the NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) East Midlands, Director of the Centre for Ethnic Health Research, and Director of The Real World Evidence Unit. He is also an Honorary Visiting Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne's Department of General Practice.
His research focuses on diabetes management, ethnic health disparities, pandemic response (including his role in SAGE's Ethnicity Sub-panel during the COVID-19 pandemic), and cardiometabolic disease comorbidities. He has published over 1,100 peer-reviewed articles and been recognized with prestigious awards, including the CBE for services to healthcare.
Key research interests include diabetes remission strategies, chronic kidney disease prevention, and optimizing care for populations with multiple long-term conditions. He advocates for equity-focused healthcare policies and has contributed to global guidelines such as KDIGO's Diabetes Management in Chronic Kidney Disease.
