Dr. Kamila Liu Barnes is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the School of Nursing, Long Island University. Her work focuses on ending racial and ethnic health disparities, particularly in maternal-child health and adolescent medicine. She received her DNP and MS from the University of Rochester and her BS from Binghamton University. Dr. Barnes is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in underserved communities.
Her research and clinical practice emphasize early intervention for adolescents and young adults, aiming to improve health trajectories and reduce morbidity. She authored a seminal article on psychosocial support for teen mothers and led a DNP project enhancing their self-efficacy in urban settings. Dr. Barnes is passionate about patient-centered care and holistic education for future nurses and advanced practice providers.
Awarded the prestigious Sojourner Truth Award (2015) and the Under 40 Award (2018), her honors reflect her leadership in addressing health inequities. She actively engages in community service and presents nationally on topics like opioid use in communities of color, adolescent contraception, and quality improvement in healthcare.
Dr. Barnes is affiliated with organizations such as the National Black Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International. Her scholarly work bridges translational research and clinical practice, advocating for systemic change in healthcare access and equity.
