Amr Kamal is an Associate Professor at The City College of New York (CCNY) in the departments of Comparative Literature and French. His research focuses on cross-cultural literary and cultural studies, particularly within Mediterranean and postcolonial frameworks, and he is recognized for contributions to comparative literature scholarship.
- Education: Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
- Research Interests: 19th and 20th century French literature, Francophone literature from the Mashreq, Mediterranean studies, postcolonial and empire studies, human geography, urban studies, material culture, translation, and cinema studies.
- Awards: Honorable Mention for Prestigious Comparative Literature Prize (American Association for Comparative Literature).
He is currently working on his book manuscript "Empires and Emporia: Fictions of the Department Store in the Modern Mediterranean," analyzing texts by Emile Zola, Huda Sha'arawi, and Jacqueline Kahanoff to critique French and Egyptian social relations in the context of the Suez Canal Project.
