Valérie K. Orlando is a Professor of French & Francophone Literatures at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she also serves as Program Head for French. She is cross-appointed as a Professor in Cinema and Media Studies and an Affiliate Faculty member at the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center. Her research and teaching focus on 20th-21st-century African and Caribbean literatures and film, postcolonial theory, and gender studies.
- Ph.D. in French and Francophone Literatures from Brown University
Her research explores intersections of memory, displacement, and cultural identity in postcolonial contexts, particularly through Algerian literature and Moroccan cinema. She has published extensively on feminist narratives, decolonial frameworks, and transcultural storytelling, with recent keynote lectures in Morocco (2023) and France (2021) addressing socio-political change and digital education trends.
Notable scientific awards include the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award (AY2023-24), a NEH Summer Stipend Grant (2024), and the Fulbright-Tocqueville Distinguished Chair (2019). She has advised PhD students on topics including the Mashreq and Canadian Francophone literature.
