Dr. Kaka Ma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Advanced Materials Discovery at Colorado State University (CSU). She holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Davis, and a B.S. in Materials Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China. Her research focuses on nanoscale materials, additive manufacturing, sustainability, and mechanical testing at small scales. Her work aims to develop advanced materials with enhanced performance for structural, electronic, and energy applications.
Dr. Ma’s research interests include nanomaterials, multiscale hierarchical structures, additive manufacturing sustainability, and low-work-function electrode materials. She leads the Nanostructured Materials and Nanomechanics Laboratory and has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed publications. Her honors include the 2020 TMS Light Metals Award and the 2018 Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing (Additive Manufacturing).
She has advised numerous graduate students, including Alexander D. Preston and Corson Cramer. Her funded projects include collaborations with Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Department of Energy, focusing on ceramic electrides and sustainable materials. Dr. Ma teaches courses such as 'Introduction to Engineering Materials' and 'Green Engineering—Materials and Environment,' emphasizing active learning and sustainability.
