Kai Wünnemann is a Professor for Impact and Planetary Physics at the Department of Earth Sciences, Freie Universität Berlin, since May 2017. He is also Deputy Head of the Science Programme "Evolution and Geoprocesses" and Head of the "Impact and Meteorite Research" section at the Museum für Naturkunde (MfN) in Berlin. His research focuses on numerical modeling of impact processes in the solar system, crater formation, ejecta dynamics, shock metamorphism, and landslide-generated tsunamis.
- Key projects include MEMIN (numerical crater modeling), Helmholtz Alliance on Planetary Evolution, and modeling of large-scale meteorite impacts.
- He leads the Graduate Programme of collaborative research centre TRR-170 "Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets", investigating lunar and terrestrial impact evolution.
At FU Berlin, he teaches courses on planetary physics and late planetary accretion processes.
