Dr. Kai Nowak is a Researcher at Justus Liebig University Giessen, affiliated with the CRC 138 “Dynamics of Security” and the Department of Contemporary History. He specializes in film scandals, media events, and cultural history, particularly focusing on the Weimar Republic and 20th-century Germany. His work bridges film studies, political history, and cultural analysis.
Education: Studied Modern/Contemporary History, Journalism, and Political Science at Universities of Münster, Humboldt University Berlin, and Free University Berlin. Held a Graduate School Scholarship (2006-2010) for transnational media events research.
Research Interests: Film scandals as cultural and political phenomena; media’s role in shaping public discourse; transnational media history; Weimar cinema; anti-colonial protest; and Marxist cultural policy. His book Projektionen der Moral (2015) examines film scandals in the Weimar Republic, while articles analyze case studies like Africa Addio and Im Westen nichts Neues.
