Kai Kornhuber serves as a Sr. Theme Coordinator for Extreme Weather & Climate Dynamics at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis. He holds multiple academic and research positions including Adjunct Associate Research Scientist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Lecturer at Columbia University's Climate School in New York. Additionally, he is a Senior Fellow on Climate Risks at the German Council on Foreign Relations.
His research focuses on understanding the physical drivers of extreme weather and climate events and their associated societal impacts under both current and future climatic conditions. Dr. Kornhuber's work bridges climate science with practical risk assessment and policy applications, particularly in the context of increasing climate-related disasters.
Dr. Kornhuber plays significant leadership roles in several important climate initiatives including as Founding Member of the EarthNetwork on Sustainable and Resilient Living in an Era of Increasing Disasters at Columbia's Climate School, Co-Chair of the Compound Events Working Group at Risk-Kan, and Co-Principal Investigator of the Project PERSEVERE within the BMBF Consortium ClimXtreme. He also leads efforts on quantifying Physical and Acute Risks within the NGFS network at Climate Analytics.
His professional activities demonstrate a strong commitment to translating climate science into actionable risk assessment frameworks that can inform policy decisions and enhance societal resilience to climate change impacts.
