Dr. Kai Chen is a Professor of Research Radiology and Radiation Oncology at the University of Southern California (USC). He holds a PhD in Chemistry from Nankai University (2001) and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. Prior to USC, he worked at Siemens Healthcare (2005–2009), leading projects in preclinical and clinical research, and contributed to the NIH’s NIBIB Intramural Program (2009–2010). His laboratory focuses on developing theranostic agents for disease diagnosis and treatment, with over 70 peer-reviewed publications and 20 patents. He serves on editorial boards of seven journals and is Vice President-Elect of the Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Council (RPSC).
Research interests include molecular imaging of cancer biology, nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, and radiopharmaceutical development. Key areas include PET imaging of tumor microenvironments, targeted therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma, and neurodegenerative disease biomarkers. His work bridges preclinical innovation to clinical translation, emphasizing multimodality imaging and therapeutic efficacy assessment.
Dr. Chen’s publications highlight advancements in radiotracer design (e.g., 18F-FMAU for prostate cancer imaging), peptide-mediated drug delivery, and CRISPR-Cas9 delivery systems for hemoglobinopathies. He collaborates extensively in drug development and has pioneered novel approaches for imaging tumor vasculature and cellular proliferation dynamics.
Professional contributions include service as a reviewer for multiple funding agencies and over 70 journals. His leadership roles reflect his expertise in translating molecular imaging research into clinical applications, shaping standards in radiopharmaceutical sciences.
