Kaethe Sandman is an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Biological and Env Science at Capital University. She teaches the course UC241 Science and Technology in Society and is based in Battelle Hall (Room 281). Contact her at ksandman2@capital.edu or 614-236-6520.
Education:
- B.A. in Biology, La Salle University, Philadelphia PA
- Ph.D. in Cellular and Developmental Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge MA
Dr. Sandman's research spans molecular genetics, microbiology, and extremophile biology. Her pioneering work includes the discovery of archaeal histones and extensive studies on gene regulation during bacterial sporulation. She specializes in structural biology of archaeal chromatin and has applied expertise in industrial/environmental geomicrobiology.
Her publications (1984-1991) primarily focus on Bacillus subtilis sporulation mechanisms, archaeal DNA-binding proteins, and thermophilic prokaryotes, employing advanced genetic and molecular techniques like transposon mutagenesis.
She has served as an NSF grant reviewer for the Life in Extreme Environments program and organized conferences on archaeal biology. Additional roles include consulting in industrial microbiology and technical publishing.
