Dr. Kadar Zoltan Daniel holds dual appointments as Chair Professor and Director of the Centre for Pragmatics Research at Dalian University of Foreign Languages (China) and Research Professor at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences' Research Centre for Linguistics (Hungary). He is also a Visiting Professor at the Hellenic American University's Doctoral School of Language and Communication. His academic career spans roles such as Yunshan Chair Professor (part-time, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, 2015–2018) and Associate Research Professor (Hungarian Academy of Sciences, 2010–2017). He earned a Doctor of Letters (D.Litt, 2016) and PhD in Chinese linguistics (2006). Notable awards include the Outstanding Young Scholars Award (2010) and Bolyai Memorial Plaquette (2011) from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2013, UK).
His research focuses on East Asian languages, intercultural pragmatics, historical pragmatics, and linguistic politeness. He has authored/editored 25 books, including Politeness, Impoliteness and Ritual (Cambridge, 2017) and Cross-Cultural Pragmatics (Cambridge, 2021). He co-edits Contrastive Pragmatics (Brill) and founded East Asian Pragmatics (Equinox). His work analyzes ritual frames, politeness markers, and cross-cultural communication dynamics in political, educational, and media contexts.
Key contributions include studies on Chinese historical letter-writing practices, ritualized apologies in state media, and politeness in global linguistic cultures. He collaborates internationally, publishing in top journals like Journal of Pragmatics and Language and Communication.
