Kabir Mansingh Heimsath serves as Assistant Professor with Term of Anthropology and Director of Asian Studies at Lewis & Clark College's Department of Sociology and Anthropology within the College of Arts and Sciences. His office is located in JR Howard Hall 371 (MSC: 60) in Portland, Oregon.
Dr. Heimsath specializes in Tibet and Himalayan studies, space/place and visual theory, borderlands research, and experiential learning. His academic focus bridges visual anthropology with contemporary socio-spatial dynamics in Asian contexts, particularly examining infrastructure, tourism, and urban development in the Himalaya region alongside contemporary art practices in Tibet.
His teaching portfolio includes Visual Anthropology, Space Place and Landscape, Borderlands, Tourism in Asia, Religion and Modernity, Cyborg Anthropology, and Ethnographic Methods. Research trajectories emphasize infrastructure-tourism interactions in the Himalaya, development studies, contemporary Buddhist practice, and urban transformations.
Academic credentials include a DPhil (2011) and MSc (2005) in Social Cultural Anthropology and Visual Anthropology from the University of Oxford, an MA (1996) in Religious Studies from the University of Washington, and a BA (1991) in Religious Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
Office hours are held Tuesday 1:00pm-3:00pm with additional appointments available. He serves as Director of Asian Studies while contributing to the Sociology and Anthropology program's curriculum and student mentorship.
