K. Wayne Yang is a Professor and Provost of John Muir College at the University of California, San Diego. His work bridges Indigenous decolonization, urban education, and climate justice. He co-founded the Indigenous Futures Institute and Black Like Water, focusing on land-based community projects and anti-colonial praxis. Yang’s research critiques settler colonialism, emphasizing Indigenous knowledge systems and urban spatial practices.
Education: Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Studies in Education from UC Berkeley. His scholarship spans books like A Third University is Possible (2017) and co-edited volumes on decolonizing education. His articles explore topics like 'ghetto land pedagogy' and 'sustainability as plantation logic.'
He received UCSD’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Collaborative projects include the Land Relationships Super Collective and the Jane Teranes Climate Change Education Requirement. Yang’s work interrogates racial capitalism, abolitionist futures, and the intersections of Black, Indigenous, and environmental struggles.
