K. Melissa Smith Hayes is an Assistant Professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, specializing in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care. She practices general cardiology and heart failure care at The Heart Center at Meharry, serving underserved communities in Nashville. Dr. Smith has been teaching nursing since 2000, becoming full-time faculty in 2008. Her expertise includes heart failure patient transition from hospital to home, literacy-appropriate education tools, and chronic disease management.
Education: DNP (Duke University), MSN (Vanderbilt University), BSN (Harding University). She contributes to academic-clinical partnerships to enhance patient outcomes and transitional care.
Active in organizations such as the Tennessee Nurses Association, National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and American Association of Heart Failure Nurses. She serves on TennCare's Technical Advisory Group for Acute CHF and Vanderbilt's Student Admissions and Academic Affairs Committee.
