Prof. Dr. Jürgen Klingauf is Professor and Chair of Medical Biophysics at the Institute of Medical Physics and Biophysics, University of Münster, where he leads the Cell Biophysics research group within the Medical Faculty. His laboratory is part of the Medical Faculty of Münster University Hospital and maintains close ties with the Fluorescence Microscopy Facility Münster (FM)².
His educational background includes:
- Studies in Biology and Physics at Universities of Hamburg and Bonn (1984-1988)
- Dr. rer. nat. (Physics) from University of Göttingen (1999)
- Postdoctoral research with Prof. Erwin Neher at MPI Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen (1999-2001)
Prof. Klingauf's research focuses on synaptic transmission mechanisms, particularly presynaptic processes involving neurotransmitter release and vesicle recycling. His laboratory develops specialized neuronal culture systems and employs cutting-edge imaging techniques including TIRFM, STED, STORM, and electron microscopy to visualize single synaptic vesicles and proteins. Key research areas include molecular coupling of exo- and endocytosis, organization of active zones, and vesicle pool dynamics. His team utilizes CRISPR/Cas-mediated knock-down and molecular biology approaches to investigate proteins critical for synaptic function.
Analysis of his publication record reveals consistent contributions to understanding synaptic vesicle dynamics, with recent work emphasizing high-resolution imaging of presynaptic mechanisms. His research bridges neuroscience, biophysics, and cell biology, with particular focus on molecular organization at synaptic sites and vesicle recycling pathways. Key themes across his work include the relationship between vesicle pools, molecular mechanisms of neurotransmitter release, and the structural organization of presynaptic compartments.
Prof. Klingauf actively mentors numerous doctoral students and has trained researchers who now hold positions at institutions worldwide including Utrecht University, University of Bordeaux, and Scripps Research. His laboratory maintains state-of-the-art microscopy facilities and collaborates extensively with other neuroscience research groups.
The Cell Biophysics group operates advanced imaging systems including dual-objective 3D dSTORM setups and specialized neuronal culture platforms that enable precise investigation of presynaptic mechanisms. Their work continues to advance fundamental understanding of synaptic transmission with implications for neurological disorders involving synaptic dysfunction.
