Dr Jürgen Groet is a Senior Lecturer in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. He serves as the Director of Education and Head of Intercalated Degrees within the Centre for Genomics and Child Health.
- Education: Studied at Hogeschool Alkmaar (The Netherlands), earned a PhD in 2000 from the University of London.
Research Interests: Focus on Down syndrome (DS) using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models, exploring gene dosage effects of chromosome 21. Key areas include leukaemia, Alzheimer’s Disease, neuronal malformations, proteomic imbalances, and mitochondrial dysfunction. His work aims to elucidate molecular pathways altered by trisomy 21, offering insights into cell proliferation, neurodegeneration, and cancer resistance.
Publication Trends: Recent articles investigate DS phenotypes, leveraging iPSC models and exome sequencing to study transient myeloproliferative disorder (TMD), AMKL, neuronal aging, and proteomic changes.
Teaching Roles: Educational lead for BSc and MSc courses, Course Director for the Intercalated BSc in Experimental Pathology, and module lead in 'iPSC and genome engineering' (MSc) and 'Experimental Neuropathology' (Intercalated BSc).
Labs and Teams: Leads the Nizetic/Groet research group, focusing on developmental alterations in DS, and collaborates within the Centre for Genomics and Child Health.
