Jürgen E Schneider is a Professor at the University of Leeds, holding a Chair in Biomedical Imaging at the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine. He is also a Visiting Professor of Medical Imaging at the Radcliffe Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Oxford. His current roles include Director of the Experimental & Preclinical Imaging Centre (ePIC), Deputy Head of the Biomedical Imaging Science Department (BISD), and Co-Director of the clinical Advanced Imaging Centre (AIC).
- Education:
- Dipl.-Phys.
- PhD (University of Würzburg, Germany, completed 2000)
Professor Schneider specializes in cardiac and biomedical imaging, with key contributions to experimental cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) for ultra-high-field phenotyping of the rodent heart. His research extends to diffusion MRI, preclinical imaging, and small animal MRI/MRS, advancing non-invasive cardiovascular imaging methodologies.
He previously co-directed the British Heart Foundation Experimental Magnetic Resonance Unit (BMRU) in Oxford, supporting national and international cardiovascular research projects. In 2016, he relocated to Leeds to establish ePIC, which houses cutting-edge multi-modal imaging equipment including 7 Tesla MRI, PET/SPECT/CT, optical imaging, ultrasound, and μCT.
- Professional Affiliations:
- International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM)
- Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM)
- British Heart Foundation (BHF)
- Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Research Centre (MCRC)
As Deputy Head of the Biomedical Imaging Science Department, he fosters interdisciplinary research and postgraduate training. He welcomes motivated PhD applicants globally and remains a leading figure in experimental cardiovascular imaging innovation.
