Jürg Schiffmann

Dr. Jürg Schiffmann is an Associate Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he leads the Laboratory for Applied Mechanical Design (LAMD) within the School of Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering. He also serves as a program committee member for EPFL's Doctoral Programs in Energy and Robotics, control and intelligent systems.

Education:

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (1999) from EPFL
• PhD in Mechanical Engineering (2008) from EPFL

Research Interests: His work focuses on automated design of mechanical systems, addressing competing objectives and constraints through computational methodologies. Specific areas include gas-lubricated bearings, high-speed turbomachinery, and rotordynamics, with applications in industrial and academic settings.

• Recipient of multiple ASME TurboExpo Best Paper Awards

Teaching & Mentorship: He teaches graduate courses on thin film lubrication, dynamical effects in mechanical design, and tribology. He has advised numerous PhD and Master’s students, including Abramishvili Anna, Artomov Andrii, and Catala I Rams Arnau.
