Jörn Müller is Full Professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Institute of Philosophy, Faculty of Human Sciences. He has held this chair since 1 March 2014, after having served as Acting Chair, Extraordinary Professor and Academic Councillor at the same university. From 2016 to 2019 he was Dean of Studies for the Faculty of Human Sciences, and since 2007 he sits on the executive board of the Society for Ancient Philosophy (GANPH).
Education:
- 1991–1997: University of Bonn & University of Edinburgh – studied History, Philosophy and Education
- 1997: First State Examination for Teaching (Sek I & II) in History and Philosophy
- 2001: PhD in Philosophy, University of Bonn – dissertation funded by the German National Academic Foundation
- 2008: Habilitation in Philosophy, University of Bonn
Research Interests:
Müller’s research spans the entire history of philosophy from antiquity through the Middle Ages, with special attention to practical philosophy, ethics and philosophical anthropology. His recent work investigates social philosophy through the lens of “commoning”, and he leads two major funded projects: an in-depth study of Cicero’s Tusculanae Disputationes as a specifically Roman philosophical project (DFG, 2020-), and a new project on happiness as the first principle of ethics in Albertus Magnus (Fritz Thyssen Foundation, 2023-).

Teaching & Supervision:
During the winter semester 2025/26 he offers a lecture on Introduction to the History of Ethics and three seminars: The Roman Stoa, Peter Abelard’s Collationes, and an intensive reading course on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. He maintains weekly office hours for BA and MA students and is currently supervising numerous term papers and theses in ancient and medieval philosophy.
