Jörg Döring is a full Professor of Modern German Philology, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Siegen within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He is a leading figure in the Collaborative Research Center 1472 'Transformations of the Popular', funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), where he serves as Co-Spokesperson. His academic journey includes positions at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Siegen, culminating in his current professorship.
His research interests are deeply rooted in 20th- and 21st-century German literature, with a focus on authors such as Wolfgang Koeppen, Alfred Andersch, Peter Kurzeck, and Navid Kermani. He is a pioneer in the study of the Spatial Turn, paratexts and epitexts, the popularization of science in the post-war German Taschenbuch (paperback), and the role of the public intellectual. His work often bridges literary scholarship with media studies, cultural history, and digital humanities.
The trends in his recent publications reveal a sustained, interdisciplinary inquiry into how the 'popular' is constructed and transformed. His work examines the cultural significance of post-war German paperback publishing, the performative aspects of authorship, and the complex interplay between literature, media, and political discourse, particularly as it pertains to the 'New Right'. His research is characterized by meticulous archival work, editorial scholarship, and theoretical sophistication.
