Jutta Wiesemann is a Professor of Educational Science with a focus on primary and preschool education at the University of Siegen, within the Faculty II: Education • Architecture • Arts, Department of Education. She leads subproject B05 “Early Childhood and Smartphones” and subproject OE in the Collaborative Research Center 1187 “Media of Cooperation,” and has been instrumental in shaping teacher education through her role as founding director of the Center for Teacher Education and Educational Research (ZLB).
Her research focuses on the materiality and mediality of learning processes, with strong emphasis on ethnography, digitalization in childhood and education, and teaching and learning research. She investigates how digital media shape children’s everyday lives and learning, and how didactic objects function as carriers of educational theory and knowledge.
The trends in her recent publications reflect a sustained interdisciplinary approach combining educational science, sociology, and media studies. Her work spans ethnographic studies of children’s media use, the commercial development of educational materials, and the integration of digital and inclusive practices in teacher training. There is a clear trajectory toward understanding how material and digital artifacts mediate educational cooperation and learning.
She has led multiple externally funded research projects, including those supported by the DFG, the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education, and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of North Rhine-Westphalia. These include projects such as Inklud.nrw, InDigO, and From the Test Phase to the Field Trial: The Use of Didactic Objects in School Lessons, demonstrating her leadership in both research and curriculum innovation.
She supervises final theses and leads a dynamic research team involving postdoctoral researchers and doctoral candidates, particularly within the SFB 1187. She also heads the OASIS - Learning Workshop, contributing to research-based learning environments.
