Justin Vlasits is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He previously served as Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter at the Philosophisches Seminar, Universität Tübingen from 2017 to 2021. He holds a PhD in Ancient Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley (2017), where his dissertation examined the method of division in Plato and Aristotle.
His research focuses on ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, particularly logic, philosophy of science, and the methodology of ancient thought. He also explores neglected women in early analytic philosophy, such as Margaret MacDonald and Olga Hahn. Current projects include translating fragments of Aristotle's lost works. His work bridges ancient and modern philosophy, emphasizing methodological analysis.
Recent publications engage with Sextus Empiricus, Plato’s Statesman, and Pyrrhonist skepticism. His scholarship spans ancient epistemology, dialectical methods, and interdisciplinary approaches to classical texts. He collaborates on edited volumes, such as Epistemology After Sextus Empiricus (OUP, 2020).
Vlasits teaches courses on ancient philosophy, classical Arabic philosophy, and epistemology, emphasizing diverse methodologies and underrepresented voices in the discipline. His research and pedagogy reflect a commitment to rigorous historical analysis and contemporary relevance.
