Johanna Schmitt

Johanna Schmitt is a researcher in the Department of Philosophy at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, specializing in Ancient Philosophy with a focus on Hellenistic and Aristotelian thought. She holds a postdoctoral position within the ERC-funded project TIDA (led by Klaus Corcilius) since 2023 and previously contributed to the DFG-funded Dimensions of Doubt project (2021–2022). Her research critically examines themes such as skepticism, epistemology, and medical philosophy in antiquity.

• Education:
• PhD in Philosophy (2021) from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, defending her dissertation Sextus Empiricus on Sophisms and Expert Knowledge, supervised by Stephen Menn and Jonathan Beere.
• Research Interests: Hellenistic skepticism, Aristotelian logic, and the intersection of medical and philosophical discourse in antiquity. She explores how ancient philosophers addressed questions of knowledge, expertise, and voluntary mental processes.

Her recent publications engage with Sextus Empiricus’s critiques of medical and philosophical reasoning, as well as Stoic theories of perception and epistemic voluntarism. She collaborates across interdisciplinary projects, reflecting her commitment to contextualizing ancient philosophy within broader intellectual histories.

She is affiliated with the Lehrstuhl für Antike Philosophie and maintains active participation in academic networks focused on classical texts and their methodologies.
