Justin Phillips

Justin Phillips is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at City, St George's, University of London, where he serves as Course Director for the MEng/BEng Biomedical Engineering program. He holds an honorary position as Research Fellow at St Bartholomew's Hospital's Department of Anaesthesia. Phillips earned his BSc in Physics from Durham University (1992) and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London (2009).

His research focuses on developing novel medical instrumentation for non-invasive health monitoring, with emphasis on:

• Photoplethysmography (PPG) signal processing
• Wearable biosensors for cardiovascular assessment
• Optical techniques for cerebral and tissue perfusion monitoring
• Medical device validation in clinical settings

Publication analysis reveals consistent focus on optical sensing innovations, with recent work expanding into wearable technology validation and circadian rhythm analysis. His 2023 PLOS Digital Health study established protocols for resting heart rate measurement using consumer wearables.

Awards include the prestigious Senior Research Fellowship jointly awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Leverhulme Trust (2015-2016), supporting his work on PPG signal interpretation. He maintains active industry collaborations, including a 2017 research position at Google developing health monitoring applications.

Phillips directs vascular biomechanical modeling laboratories at City University and collaborates with major London teaching hospitals. He co-authored the textbook Physics in Anaesthesia, a key resource for medical trainees.
