Justin Nodwell is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, where he has worked since 2013. He previously held a faculty position at McMaster University from 1998 to 2013 and serves as Chair of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the chemical biology of microbial life, particularly the bacterial genus Streptomyces, known for producing antibiotics and other therapeutic compounds.

Research Interests center on understanding how bacteria use small organic molecules for communication, competition, and nutrient acquisition. His lab investigates the biochemical mechanisms that allow Streptomyces to produce antibacterial compounds without self-toxicity, bridging fundamental microbial biology and drug development. This work addresses urgent needs for new antibiotics and therapies against diseases like cancer.
Teaching includes courses such as BCH350H (Antibiotics and antibiotic targets) and advanced research projects in biochemistry. His lab is part of the Department of Biochemistry’s broader initiatives in molecular medicine and drug discovery.
