Justin Langlois

Justin Langlois is the Associate Vice-President of Research and Dean of the Jake Kerr Faculty of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. He holds an academic rank of Associate Professor within the Faculty of Culture + Community. His roles include overseeing graduate studies and research initiatives, alongside his teaching and artistic practice.

Langlois’ research interests span socially engaged art, critical pedagogy, and collaborative structures. His work explores themes such as participation, collectivism, and the intersection of art with civic engagement. He has developed initiatives like Broken City Lab and the Neighbourhood Time Exchange, which emphasize community-driven projects and reciprocal relationships between artists and neighborhoods.

Langlois has received notable recognition, including funding from the Canada Council for the Arts’ New Chapter program for his project Locals Only. His contributions to socially engaged art and education have been highlighted through exhibitions and publications in venues like the Centre Pompidou and Canadian Art.

In his teaching roles, Langlois supervises graduate students in MFA, MDes, and Low-Res MFA programs, and leads courses in Social Practice and Critical Studies. He has also taught at the University of Windsor and co-founded the School for Eventual Vacancy, an experimental educational framework.

Key initiatives include the Neighbourhood Time Exchange, an artist residency model fostering community collaboration through time banking, and Float School, which explores pedagogical frameworks in public spaces. His work often intersects with public art installations and participatory projects.
