Dr. Justin Ales is a Lecturer at the School of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of St Andrews. His research focuses on neuroimaging, vision, and computational neuroscience, particularly combining EEG and fMRI techniques to study visual processing mechanisms. He holds a PhD in Vision Science from UC Berkeley (2007) and a B.S. in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering from USC (2002).
Research interests include computational models of visual cortex activity, modulation of neural processing under environmental changes, and neurological dysfunction effects on vision (e.g., epilepsy). He has supervised PhD students Alex Backler and Andreea Miscov. His work has been supported by grants such as the Wellcome Trust (2021–2022).
Key contributions include advancing EEG/MEG source estimation and studying motion perception, pseudoneglect reliability, and face detection via swept VEP. His recent 2025 paper in Nature Human Behaviour highlights large language models outperforming human experts in neuroscience predictions.
